_HISTORY: Here

_ABILITIES: Fang originally had a huge gamut of powers, but her l'Cie powers are gone (and as I understand it, these powers cannot be returned to her). So she has been regulated to mostly "normal" human status. She is in tip-top physical condition however: she's very strong and light on her feet, and while not nearly at Lightning's literal godlike capabilities, is able to hold her own against huge beasts, monsters, and Order soldiers. She has the ability to cast Magnet, which summons a small vortex to capture and damage nearby enemies, Ruin, a single-target non-elemental spell that causes minor to moderate damage, Armor Break, a skill that reduces overall defense of opponents, and Mediguard, an ability that enables her to take reduced damage and restores her health over time.

_PERSONALITY:It’s hard to believe that up until thirteen years ago, Vanille and I were stuck in that crystal pillar. It was a long sleep. Well, hell. It’s been hundreds of years since the days we fought together as l’Cie. And before we met, I was stuck in another damn crystal. I’ve been asleep more than a thousand years of my life. I did the math. Technically, I think that makes me the oldest hag on the planet. Not that I’ll ever act my age. Wouldn’t be much fun.

When meeting Fang initially, it is pretty easy to write her off as a jerk. This is in part because...she is an enormous jerk. Her first task when finding Lightning again after hundreds of years of not seeing her is to make her go through a buttload of irritating (and dangerous!) trials to prove that she’s the real deal before even agreeing to meet her. She does not reveal that she’s the one responsible for the trials until after Lightning has surpassed them, and she does all this in a way that suggests that she was in part making Lightning go through a bunch of tasks because it was funny to her. A wonderful friend, basically. She is frequently direct to the point of bluntness (her official description describes her as someone "unconcerned with trivialities"), appears lackadaisical and unconcerned in a way that needles other, more serious individuals, and her sense of humor bounces between sarcastic and self-deprecating. She takes boundaries, acknowledges them, and then oversteps them. She is not typically a diplomatic person, can be quick-tempered and hot-headed, and she barrels into things without acknowledging or caring about long-term consequences. Her philosophy is to do the dirty work, and deal with the consequences later, or as she puts it, "I've never been afraid to die, if it was for something I believed in." Despite her many, many months and years and centuries of life, this is the personality trait of hers that she holds onto no matter what. It unfortunately is what gets her into a lot of dangerous situations, and by extension, just about everyone else she comes in contact with.

With that said...Fang is a fun jerk. She’s extroverted and she tends to inject humor into otherwise dismal or terrible situations. She talks about twice as much as the ever-stoic Lightning during cutscenes and field interactions, she’s a little flirty (though she is never serious about this) and likes to tease people. Another thing to note is that her rough-and-tumble behavior aside, she is clever and perceptive. She almost instantly gets the hang of using Cocoon technology and weaponry, even with it being hundreds of years beyond her time, she steps in front of Snow to keep him from greeting the traitorous Cid Raines in the Fifth Ark, she figures out the truth behind Vanille's Soulsong on her own, and of course, she always has some smart alecky thing to say. Despite being kind of rude and often bitingly sarcastic, she is easy to get along with, at least on a surface level. She’s charismatic enough to get a group of bandits organized enough to run an entire desert under her rule for years, and appears to be well-liked and respected by her group of, in her words, “ne’er-do-wells.” Long ago, during her first meeting with Lightning, she is able to gain her respect almost right off the bat...and this is after she tells Lightning about her role in getting everyone branded as l’Cie. For context, getting Lightning’s respect is a hell of a challenge, and part of the reason these two get along so well is because Fang, even though she is something of an obnoxious, sarcastic jackass...is also an honest, brave and dedicated person. She may make mistakes, but she acknowledges and apologizes for them.

Unfortunately, Fang is dedicated to a fault. Her self-focused agenda is often at the expense of many, many others. For example: she becomes Ragnarok to spare Vanille the trauma of having to have all of those deaths on her hands...but she is fully willing to bear the burden of killing millions of people, just so that the Focus can be completed and Vanille won't have to. She inadvertently allows Sazh's son, Dajh, to be branded as a l'Ce after she attacks a Cocoon fal'Cie to continue the work of she and Vanille's Focus. Later, in Lightning Returns, Fang's primary concern is finding the holy clavis, an artifact Vanille needs to complete a ritual known as the Soulsong, which will (presumably) free the souls trapped in the Chaos so that they might be ferried to the new world by Lightning. However, this ritual will end in Vanille's death. Despite this being Vanille's wish, and despite the fact that it is meant to free countless souls, Fang intends to destroy it. She would rather save Vanille and damn the rest than deal with the alternative. Vanille's safety and well-being (and by extension, that of their friends) takes precedence over everything else: the world's well-being, the well-being of her other people, her own well-being, and sometimes even Vanille's happiness. This trend pops up not only in regards to their first Focus, but in their second one as well: when the group decides to buck their Focus and fight the fal'Cie, Fang turns on them in a rage and attempts to mercy kill them, saying it would be better if they were to die than become Cie'th. All the way up to the very end of the game, she is willing to become Ragnarok so that they won't have to. Fang is a fatalistic sort — during her first and second Focus, it never seems to occur to her that they can defy the fal'Cie. To her, a second of hesitation or self-doubt will most assuredly end in their deaths or transformation into Cie'th: she is the character to frequently remind the others of their brands' progression, and the dangers of letting it go too far. While she detests being held in thrall by the fal'Cie, she has lived a life where humanity are slaves to the fal'Cie, and cannot fathom doing anything but. Only when shown a third option by her friends does she reconsider her penchant for barreling ahead without questioning things.

That said, Fang does harbor a great deal of guilt for her actions. In Lightning Returns, it's revealed that although she and Vanille have atoned for their role in the War of Transgression, by saving Cocoon, both of them still feel like they haven't done enough. Fang expresses sadness and regret at the state of the dying world, at what has happened to her friends, and for taking on the task of becoming Ragnarok hundreds of years ago. In Final Fantasy XIII-2, she sincerely apologizes to Serah for her role in making her a l'Cie, and in the light novels set after her crystallization, she worries for Dajh, blaming herself for what happened to him. She even expresses understanding for Vanille's desire to atone by performing the Soulsong. However, it's important to note that Fang is capable of committing great acts of destruction despite her burden of guilt, if it is to guarantee the safety of those she cares about.
